United Way establishes two funds for Haiti

On the evening of January 12, 2010, a major 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti . It is the most powerful quake to hit the impoverished country in more than 200 years. The Prime Minister reported on January 13 that hundreds of thousands of lives may have been lost.

Gifts to the United Way Worldwide Disaster Fund support long-term recovery efforts to rebuild lives and infrastructure devastated by disaster and to address educational, financial and health-related challenges.

You can help people affected by donating to the United Way Worldwide Disaster Fund.

Individuals can also contribute $5 to Haiti's long-term recovery by texting: Haiti to United (864833). Standard text messaging rates apply.

Gifts to Operation Helping Hands, which is being coordinated by United Way of Miami-Dade in Florida, will provide emergency relief activities in Haiti through: World Vision, which has been operating programs in Haiti for over thirty years; the University of Miami’s Project Medishare, providing medical care; and Pan American Development Foundation, a disaster expert team in Port-au-Prince.

100% of funds raised through Operation Helping Hands will be used to purchase relief items needed in Haiti during this time of crisis.  Monetary donations made to Operation Helping Hands will go directly to help the people of Haiti through non-profit organizations working on the ground.

You can help people affected by donating to Operation Helping Hands.

To send a check, please make it payable to: United Way of North Central Massachusetts, 285 John Fitch Hwy, Fitchburg, MA 01420. Donors should indicate in the memo field of their check Operation Helping Hand or Disaster Fund.
