Day of Caring Food Drive Planned Sept. 15-22

Fitchburg, MA (September 10, 2010) – Anticipating an increased demand at food pantries this fall, United Way of North Central Massachusetts is sponsoring a food drive, Sept.15-22, in conjunction with its annual Day of Caring.

“Due to the stubbornly high unemployment rate, we anticipate an increased demand will be placed on local food pantries,” said Kathy Heintz, director of community investment for United Way of North Central Massachusetts.

The Day of Caring includes over 500 volunteers, assisting local health and human service agencies with a variety of maintenance projects. United Way has added the Sept. 15-22 food drive, which will have drop-off locations at: Montachusett Regional YMCA, 55 Wallace Ave., Fitchburg; the Workers’ Credit Unions at 815 Main St., Fitchburg, Twin City Mall, Leominster, 319 N. Main St., Leominster, Wal-Mart Supercenter, Leominster, 603 Mass Ave., Lunenburg, 221 Main St., Townsend, and 171 Main St., Gardner; the United Way of North Central Massachusetts, 285 John Fitch Hwy., Fitchburg; Mount Wachusett Community College, 444 Green St., Gardner; North Middlesex Savings Bank locations at 947 Mass Ave., Lunenburg, 95 Front St., Shirley, 7 Main St., Ayer, 6 Andrews Pkwy., Devens, 220 Great Rd., Littleton, 80 Main St., Pepperell and 489 Main St., Groton; Enterprise Banks, 420 John Fitch Hwy., Fitchburg and 4 Central St., Leominster.

Items requested include nonperishable foods, such as: peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, canned vegetables, tuna in water, canned meats, macaroni and cheese, hearty soups, rice sticks, kidney beans, as well as toiletry items and diapers.
