On April 13, 2018, Leominster Public Schools hosted a Partnering for Literacy Recognition Event to thank the United Way of North Central Massachusetts and Affordable Interior Systems, Inc. (AIS), and to welcome the program’s newest Classroom Assistants.
The United Way’s Partnering for Literacy program was launched in October 2017 in collaboration with Leominster Public Schools and AIS, Inc., the program’s first corporate partner, to help train volunteers who could support student literacy as Classroom Assistants.
Thanks to tremendous support and assistance from Diane Encarnacao, AIS’ Human Resource Director, nine of the program’s first ten volunteers came from AIS. The tenth inaugural volunteer is an employee of Family Federal Savings in Fitchburg.
At the April event, nine new volunteers were welcomed to the program as Classroom Assistants. Six of the volunteers are also AIS employees, along with two individuals from the Association of North Central Massachusetts Realtors, and one who is a community resident.
Receiving special appreciation at the event was AIS’ CEO Bruce Platzman, who was recognized both for his commitment to the community, and for creating a corporate culture that actively promotes volunteering.
The Partnering for Literacy collaboration has helped to build the literacy and social skills of 19 kindergarten students. The program goal for the 2018-2019 school year is to double the number of teacher mentors and Classroom Assistants in order to serve 28-32 kindergarteners.
