United Way awards 10 fellowships at its annual meeting

For Immediate Release (7 p.m.,October 25, 2005) – United Way of North Central Massachusetts awarded 10 Community Builders Fellowships for ideas to boost volunteerism at its 25th Annual Meeting Tuesday evening (Tuesday, October 25, 2005) at the Four Points Sheraton in Leominster.

The awards culminated a series of outreach efforts over the past 12 months by Community Builders, a partnership between United Way of North Central Massachusetts and Mount Wachusett Community College, to build volunteer capacity.

Karson Aubuchon, chair of Community Builders, presented the following individuals checks from $1040 to $3600: Sandra Haagsma, Alternatives, Whitinsville; Terry Kennedy, ARC Community Service/Alliance for Resource Management, Fitchburg; George Luoto, Center for Technical Education at Leominster High School, Leominster; Nicole Alton, Chester Mossman Teen Center, Lunenburg; Andrea Grimes, GIVE (Getting Involved in Volunteerism), Leominster; Christine House, Kids Connect, Shirley; Kathy Stamski, Loaves and Fishes, Devens; Phil Cebula, Right Steps, Fitchburg; Jennifer Jones, Simple Gifts, Fitchburg; Sandy Valeri, Wellness Policy Committee, Leominster.

Prior to making the awards, Daniel Asquino, chairman of United Way, told the audience of more than 160 that the organization experienced another successful year, raising $2,790,446. Asquino also reported that 63 local health and human services programs were funded through the Community Care Fund, which is specifically designed to target high priority needs.

The Annual Campaign raises charitable dollars through workplace and individual giving.

It was also noted that nonprofit agencies received $120,000 of donated office supplies and furniture through United Way’s partnership with Product Philanthropy, a national program to make new products available for free or at a fraction of the cost.

Asquino reported that the Leominster Public Schools, Shirley Public Schools, Fitchburg Public Schools, Ayer Public Schools, North Middlesex Public Schools, Parker Charter Essential School and North Central Charter Essential School participated in United Way sponsored Youth Venture, a national non-profit organization dedicated to youth initiatives.

Following the reports from the chairman and treasurer, officers elected to one-year terms were: Chairman Scott Howard, Bemis Associates; Vice Chairman and Treasurer Steven L. Stone, Sterilite Corporation; Assistant Treasurer David Garrison, Micron Products; Clerk Richard M. Nobile, I-C Federal Credit Union; and President Phil Grzewinski, chief professional officer of United Way of North Central Massachusetts.

Honorable Luis Perez, Worcester County Juvenile Court was reelected as a director to a three-year term expiring 2008.

Karson Aubuchon of Princeton and Reinaldo Lopez, Resource Management, Inc. were elected as new directors to three-year terms expiring 2008.

Joanne Tulonen, Battered Women’s Resources, Inc., was elected as an ex officio member of the board.

To wrap up the evening, Karson Aubuchon announced Mount Wachusett Community College Foundation, Inc. received a $50,000 grant from the National Human Services Assembly, which will allow Community Builders to continue promoting volunteerism through a variety of outreach and educational efforts.

The United Way of North Central Massachusetts serves the communities of Ashburnham, Ashby, Ayer, Barre, Devens, Fitchburg, Gardner, Groton, Harvard, Hubbardston, Leominster, Littleton, Lunenburg, Pepperell, Shirley, Templeton, Townsend, Westminster and Winchendon.
