Community leadership forum to be held
For Immediate Release (April 12, 2005) - Community Builders, a partnership between United Way of North Central Massachusetts and Mount Wachusett Community College to inspire volunteerism, is hosting a one-day conference on creating positive social change on Thursday, May 5, 2005 at the Four Points Sheraton, Leominster.
The program, Creating Change: Leadership Matters, is designed for nonprofit, civic, and business leaders or anyone who is interested in driving positive social changes in their community, according to Amy Casavina Hall, director of Community Builders.
William Drayton, chairman & chief executive officer for Ashoka: Innovators for the Public, will be the featured presenter. Ashoka was named by Worth Magazine as one of the 100 best charities in the United States.
Ashoka is a global association of over 1400 leading ‘social entrepreneurs,’ individuals who envision and implement pattern-setting social changes in the environment, education, and human rights. Drayton is also the founder of Youth Venture, a national organization that helps young people across the U.S. start new youth-led organizations.
In addition to hearing from Mr. Drayton, participants will hear from two Askoka Fellows, Mary Gordon of Toronto Canada, who implemented an innovative, classroom-based parenting program that reduces childhood levels of aggression in over 130 schools, and Amy Barzach of Bloomfield, CT who is building handicap accessible playgrounds.
The audience will learn how to effect change by harnessing the current assets in the community and building a broad coalition. Three local individuals will also discuss how they are addressing both local and international issues.
Individuals who are interested in learning more about the event or registering are encouraged to call United Way of North Central Massachusetts at 978-345-1577 or visit their web site: www.uwncm.org
The event is being hosted by Community Builders and Ashoka and corporate sponsors Bemis Associates, Fitchburg Savings Bank, Norwood Fine Cabinetry, Sterilite Corporation, Hannaford Supermarkets and Unitil.
Leave a lasting legacy, remember the United Way of North Central Massachusetts in your will or estate plan.
