United Way helps Loaves & Fishes

For Immediate Release - United Way of North Central Massachusetts has provided the funding for Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry to purchase a walk-in refrigerator and freezer for their new facility, which it hopes to open by the end of the year.

Loaves and Fishes, which provides food, emergency shelter and resource referral, will be relocating from its current location at MacArthur Avenue to Barnum Road, Devens.

The new building needs extensive renovations. In the past, the pantry has relied on about a dozen donated refrigerators and freezers, all of which were in varying stages of disrepair. The $11,670 donation by United Way will purchase a commercial walk-in cooler and freezer large enough to meet the pantry’s on-going needs. “We are thrilled that United Way of North Central Massachusetts reached out to us to provide us with this funding,” said Lisa Martel, president of the Board of Trustees of Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry, Inc.

According to Mrs. Martel, the agency has had difficulty finding adequate storage for perishable donations it receives.

“We quickly realized the importance of this funding given the number of families Loaves and Fishes serves each month. We are glad that United Way could help such an important cause,” noted Peter Bovenzi, 2004-05 campaign co-chair of United Way of North Central Massachusetts.

United Way of North Central Massachusetts serves the communities of Ashburnham, Ashby, Ayer, Barre, Devens, Fitchburg, Gardner, Groton, Harvard, Hubbardston, Leominster, Littleton, Lunenburg, Pepperell, Shirley, Templeton, Townsend, Westminster and Winchendon.
