Mental health committee formed

For Immediate Release (January 24, 2005) - Two informational meetings, hosted by Unitil and United Way of North Central Massachusetts, about heating assistance and homelessness has lead to the creation of a mental health committee.

The committee will look at the issues affecting mental health care in the region. “The group felt that there are gaps in services and that the chronically mentally ill are difficult to serve, which can create potential civil right issues,” commented United Way’s Lynn Landon, community investment director.

The committee, which includes individuals from a variety of health and human service agencies, will examine issues that impact individuals and families from initially seeking care to ongoing support.

Unitil initially approached United Way to help get the word out on the various programs that help residents manage their energy bills. After further discussion, the program was expanded to include homelessness and emergency food and clothing. The first meeting was held in November and included 65 individuals representing elected officials, health and human service providers, and fire and police departments.

“We were surprised by the attendance and passion in the room to further explore these important community issues,” noted Stephanye Schuyler, PR executive for Unitil.

Following the second meeting in January the group decided to continue the forums and expand them to include mental health.

The first meeting for the mental issue committee will take place in February. Anyone who is interested in participating is encouraged to contact Lynn Landon at United Way of North Central Massachusetts.
