January 5, 2017 Update:
Thank you. We have over 400 volunteers signed up for our Jan. 19 event. Please check back for future events.
Leominster, Mass. – United Way of North Central Massachusetts is seeking more than 400 volunteers to package 100,000 meals Jan. 19 at DoubleTree by Hilton Leominster. The food will be distributed to local food pantries.
United Way of North Central Massachusetts Volunteer Center launched its Combat Hunger initiative, which packages healthy meals using community volunteers, a few years ago as a way to help feed families.
“Because of the ongoing needs of our local pantries, we established an aggressive goal of packaging 100,000 meals,” Phil Grzewinski, president of United Way of North Central Massachusetts, said. “We know the food pantries really appreciate having healthy food to provide to their clients.”
According to Fran Longton, volunteer manager for United Way, the date was picked to honor Martin Luther King’s legacy. “Over 400 volunteers are needed and this is a great event to do as a family. Children ages 10 and up can participate with their parents.”
The event is made possible by Aubuchon Hardware, Dunkin Donuts, Research Results, Inc. and Phil and Debbie Richards.
United Way Combat Hunger Meal Packaging Event is Jan. 19, 2017, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the DoubleTree by Hilton, 99 Erdman Way. All volunteers must register prior to the event to participate, which can be done at uwncm.org.
