Leominster, Mass. - The residents of Town & Country Apartments packaged 20,000 meals yesterday for local food pantries.
This is the second time this year that community volunteers have come together to package meals that were given to food pantries in Gardner, Templeton, Winchendon, Fitchburg, Leominster, Devens, Townsend and Pepperell
“When I heard about the impact of these food packaging events, I wanted to sponsor it at our apartment complex,” said Marc DiGeronimo, president of Town & Country Management. “We have such caring residents, I thought it was a great way for all of us to give back.”
Participants assembled the food packaging meals in the community room of Town & Country Apartments, located next to Twin City Plaza, in partnership with United Way Volunteer Center and Outreach Inc. Kids Care, a nonprofit organization that provides the meal packaging program at host locations across the United States.
About 60 residents from the complex, along with other volunteers from the community, packaged, sealed and boxed nutritious meals of rice and beans, and macaroni and cheese. The boxes of meals were delivered to 12 food pantries across the region.
“Town & Country Apartments and their residents demonstrate the collective impact that can be made through volunteerism,” said Karin Oliveira, director of United Way’s Volunteer Center.
According to Oliveira, United Way’s Volunteer Center has set a goal of packaging 125,000 meals during 2014. Businesses that are interested in sponsoring a food packaging event can contact Karin Oliveira at 978-345-1577.
