United Way of North Central Massachusetts’ Community Builders, in partnership with Fitchburg State University’s Crocker Center for Civic Engagement, have created a scholarship program for students who develop and launch community service projects.
“It is a great opportunity for Fitchburg University students. They get to network, learn valuable workplace skills and an opportunity for a scholarship, while addressing important community issues,” said Karin Oliveira, director of the United Way’s Community Builders, who will manage the initiative.
Oliveira said the students are required to choose an issue area in which they are passionate, and recruit a team of six or more volunteers. Once a student has completed three community service projects, his or her cause will be posted online, where fellow students will vote for their favorite initiative. The projects receiving the most votes will receive a Campus to Community Scholarship, which are between $500 and $1,000.
Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year. The awards will be presented in May at a year-end symposium.
